Casshern Sins - Preview

Fallout 3: Now starring Mega Man and a Troll Doll

The first action show I’ve come across this season is produced by Madhouse, famous for their rather unique approach to anime (Death Note, Akagi, Kaiji, etc.) Casshern Sins has a long and mediocre history; this is the third attempt at animating it, if I understand correctly. I’d like to explain what the show is about in this first paragraph, but I honestly don’t know. Casshern is apparently king asshole of the apocalypse, and robots want to eat him for no reason and everyone who has a line in the first episode uses it to declare precisely how much they hate him. He’s apparently a tremendous dick, but he seems awfully confused about it. After they say Casshern’s name a few more times, they introduce a little girl named Ringo, and that’s pretty much where it ends. 90% of the episode’s dialoge: “Casshern Casshern Casshern Casshern Casshern Casshern Casshern Ringo Casshern Ringo Ringo Casshern Casshern Casshern Ringo Casshern.” Word keeps bitching about the spelling of the word “Casshern” so I’ll stop that now.

On the technical side, the animation is incredible, and the musical score equally so. Madhouse is amazing at what they do, but the source material is what has me worried. It’s entirely incomprehensible at the moment, but I say it’s worth a few more episodes to let things get rolling.

First Impression: 7.5/10
Verdict: Worth it for the production values alone.
